BMX star Saya Sakakibara has had an emotional and eventful career thus far. 

Her brother Kai Sakakibara suffered a horrific injury in 2020, which ended his BMX career. A year later, Saya herself had a nasty crash at the Tokyo Olympics

However, she has rebounded, and will push for a medal at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Saya Sakakibara Olympic event: What is Australian BMX star competing in at Paris 2024?

Sakakibara will compete in the 'Cycling BMX Racing - Women' event. 

She took part in the same event in Tokyo, where she reached the semi-finals but exited on a stretcher after a bad crash.

The 24-year-old enters the Paris Olympics in strong form – she took out BMX Racing World Cup in 2023 and retained her title in 2024. 

This year's event will take place at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines BMX Stadium, which is located in the National Velodrome.

Sakakibara qualified fastest out of her heat to make the semi-finals in the early hours of Saturday morning.
