Who is Callum Peters?
Callum Peters is a 21-year-old boxer from Adelaide who was recently named NAIDOC SA Sportsperson of the Year for 2024.
At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Peters announced himself on the international stage, claiming a silver medal as an 18-year-old - the youngest athlete in the middleweight division.
On that occasion, Peters, who goes by the nickname "50 Cal", was defeated by split decision in the final.
Since then, according to Australian Olympic boxing team coach Marcos Amado, Peters has come on leaps and bounds.
"Callum's improving out of sight," Amado told the Main Event Boxing podcast.
"He is the consummate workhorse. I think it will be hard to find anyone who throws more punches than him in a round. He is like a machine gun. That's why they call him 50 Cal.
"He's non-stop, it's like you're getting suffocated by a pillow. Although it's only three rounds, he takes them to as deep a water as he can within three rounds and drowns them."
Asked whether Peters was a good shot at a medal: "Definitely," Amado said.
"On his day, Callum can beat anyone in front of him."
