Playoffs berths, top seeds can be clinched in NHL season's final days image

Three days left; fourth berths to secure. And what will the matchups be in the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs?

Thursday's games could well settle most of the questions. The biggest involve teams looking to clinch playoff berths — one of them without playing.

That would be the New York Islanders. A playoff berth in their final season at Nassau Coliseum will be locked if either the Boston Bruins or Ottawa Senators lose on Thursday.

Other teams' clinching scenarios:

Eastern Conference

MONTREAL CANADIENS: The Atlantic Division title and No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference is theirs if they defeat the Detroit Red Wings AND the Tampa Bay Lightning lose. If the Habs get one point against the Wings, they will clinch if the Lightning lose in regulation. The Lightning play at home against the New Jersey Devils.

DETROIT RED WINGS: They must beat the Canadiens. But there are alternatives — the Wings get a point and either the Senators or Bruins lose.

BOSTON BRUINS: After getting shut out by the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, the Bruins are after a wild-card berth. They must beat the Florida Panthers AND see the Senators lose in regulation.

OTTAWA SENATORS: Their only hope of making the playoffs is to win out and see the Bruins lose their remaining games.

Western Conference

ANAHEIM DUCKS: The Pacific Division champs can secure top seed in the West if the Blues lose in regulation and the Predators lose, period.

ST. LOUIS BLUES: The Central Division title is theirs with a home victory over the Chicago Blackhawks AND if the Predators lose in regulation. The Preds play at hom against the Jets.

WINNIPEG JETS: There will be playoffs in Manitoba if the Jets beat the Colorado Avalanche OR if they get one point against the Avalanche AND the Los Angeles Kings lose to the Flames in any fashion OR if the Kings lose to the Flames in regulation.

CALGARY FLAMES: They'll clinch with a victory over the Kings.

If the Stanley Cup playoffs began today, these would be the first-round matchups:

Eastern Conference

(First team listed hold home-ice advantage; * - clinched playoff berth)

New York Rangers* vs. Boston Bruins (wild card)

Montreal Canadiens* vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (wild card)

Tampa Bay Lightning* vs. Detroit Red Wings (2 vs. 3, Atlantic)

Washington Capitals* vs. New York Islanders (2 vs. 3, Metropolitan

Outside looking in: Ottawa Senators. The Bruins hold the East's final wild-card berth on a tie-breaker; both they and the Sens have 95 points.

Western Conference

Anaheim Ducks* vs. Winnipeg Jets (wild card)

St. Louis Blues* vs. Minnesota Wild (wild card)

Nashville Predators* vs. Chicago Blackhawks* (2 vs. 3, Central)

Vancouver Canucks* vs. Calgary Flames (2 vs. 3, Pacific)

Outside looking in: Los Angeles Kings. With 93 points and two games left, the Kings must win out and hope the Jets, with 96, lose both their remaining games. No berth, no title defense for the defending Stanley Cup champions.
