Until 2014's Kings & Queens of the Underground, Billy Idol hadn't released an album of songs since 2006. And that was a Christmas album.
So of course Billy Idol, 59-year-old British-born punk rocker, is the perfect choice for the featured singer at the NHL's Winter Classic in Washington, D.C.

It's possibly the most tone-deaf selection the NHL made since the NHL had Def Leppard open its 2008-09 season in a Detroit concert.
William Michael Albert Broad singing his 1983 hit "White Wedding" is the very essence of the NHL.
Well done.
FYI, the NHL's 2001 All-Star Game in Denver featured Thomas Dolby live, about 15 years after his "She Blinded Me with Science" was a hit. Def Leppard's '08 performance proved to be a disgrace when lead singer Joe Elliott plopped the Stanley Cup on a pedestal upside down.
Result: epic fail.
Maybe Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly would have been better options. KISS and its 1970s act was done last year in the Kings-Ducks outdoor game.
