"It's always great in a final when Russia and Canada play," former NHL star Ilya Kovalchuk said via the IIHF website. "It will be very interesting. I think it will be a very exciting game. I'm excited."
Well, yeah.
It was defense that carried Canada to gold at the 2014 Sochi Games. But with many of the nation's best blue-liners involved in the Stanley Cup playoffs' conference finals, Russia's snipers have an opportunity to steal victory from their long-time rivals.
Not that Canada can't match Russia's firepower. Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin, Jason Spezza and Jordan Eberle lead the tournament in scoring. Crosby counters Penguins teammate Malkin. And the maple leaf-crested defense has more than held its own.
Coach Todd McLellan, expected to soon become Edmonton Oilers coach, directs Canada. Crosby could become the 27th man to have gold medals in the worlds and the Olympics and a Stanley Cup win.

"At this point, everyone's mind is on winning," Crosby said. "Hopefully, we can finish it off."
Ovechkin flew to Prague the day after his Capitals were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs. It took him two periods to get his legs back, but he scored in the third period of Russia's 4-0 victory over the U.S. in the semifinals.
Unbeaten Canada isn't overconfident but knows the task at hand.
"We came here to have a chance to compete for the gold medal and now we have that," Spezza told media members after Saturday's game.
And they have a shot at perfection against their biggest rival.
FYI: Canada won the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. It last won the worlds in 2007. Russia is defending champion and won four of the past seven tournaments. Its 2009 victory came in a 2-1 final against Canada.
The gold-medal game will be carried live on NBC Sports Network and streamed on NBC Sports Live Extra.
