Tommy DeVito's first career start against the Cowboys didn't go very well. His Giants struggled in that matchup, a 49-17 loss.

Things went much better in DeVito's second career start, and he earned his first career win as a result.

DeVito's Giants logged a 31-19 win over the Commanders in their Week 11 meeting. That gave New York not only a big-time upset, but it also gave the team a season sweep over Washington.

After struggling against the Cowboys, DeVito was prolific against the Commanders. He enjoyed a career-best day as a passer and showcased the skills that made the Giants want to keep him around after a solid preseason.

INJURY UPDATES: De'Von Achane | Aaron Jones

Here's a breakdown of DeVito's performance and stats against the Commanders.

Tommy DeVito stats today

DeVito completed 18 of 26 passes against the Commanders for 246 yards and three touchdowns. He didn't turn the ball over once during the contest and posted a passer rating of 137.7.

DeVito was able to read the field well and kept finding open receivers throughout the contest. He threw the ball with pinpoint accuracy down the field, as he showcased on a first-half touchdown to Saquon Barkley.

The impressive part of DeVito's success? He did so without running the ball. Against Dallas, he scrambled seven times for 41 yards. Against Washington? He hung in the pocket and didn't run the ball once at all.

That type of poise was impressive, especially considering that DeVito was making just his second career start.

Of course, there were still some times on Sunday when DeVito looked like a rookie. While he didn't turn the ball over, he took a whopping nine sacks during the contest. He joined Daniel Jones (10) and Sam Howell (9) as the only quarterbacks to be sacked that many times in a single game this season.

But overall, DeVito was able to make far more positive plays than negative ones on Sunday. That's why the Giants were able to earn a bounce-back victory over the Commanders.

Most times sacked in a game

For those wondering, DeVito was three shy of the NFL's single-game times sacked record of 12. That's a mark that has been reached by three quarterbacks in NFL history: Bert Jones, Warren Moon and Donovan McNabb.

It shouldn't be a surprise that DeVito took a lot of sacks against Washington. He was sacked five times in his first career start against the Cowboys, but he also had a penchant for taking sacks during his college career.

While at Syracuse in 2019, DeVito was sacked 44 times in 12 games. That was good for the most in the country.

Coincidentally, DeVito posted a passer rating of 137.7 — the mark he posted against the Commanders on Sunday — during the 2019 season at Syracuse. So, as long as he can continue to make plays down the field, he should continue to give the Giants a chance while starting, provided that he continues to avoid turnovers.
