Wide receiver Sterling Shepard has suffered a broken thumb, the New York Giants announced on Thursday.
The Giants' potential number-one receiver will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.
Shepard is entering his first season as New York's leading option on the outside after the team dealt Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns this offseason.
The 26-year-old had 66 catches for 872 yards and four touchdowns last season and has had caught at least 59 passes in each of his first three years with the club.
He has also had at least 600 receiving yards in every year he has played for the Giants.
The X-ray on Sterling Shepard’s thumb revealed a fracture. Shepard will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

Shepard was originally a second-round pick by the Giants out of Oklahoma in 2016.
New York did sign Golden Tate this offseason, so he would likely see more passes if Shepard misses any time to start the season.
Corey Coleman is also on the team's roster as are Cody Latimer, Darius Slayton and Russell Shepard.
