Former NFL coach Sam Wyche has surgery for new heart image

Former NFL head coach Sam Wyche is undergoing heart transplant surgery Tuesday morning, according to multiple reports.

"Now, I am thrilled to tell all of you he is now at 2:50 am on his way to the OR for his new heart," a post on Wyche's Facebook page read. "He does not know who the donor is nor any of the circumstances surrounding his donor. Sam is eternally grateful as all of you can imagine."

There's no word on Wyche's condition or how long the procedure is expected to take place.

Wyche's surgery is taking place at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

The 71-year-old coached the Bengals and Bucs from 1984-1995 and also played in the NFL for eight seasons. Wyche, a former quarterback, is known for his offensive innovation, which included introducing the no-huddle to the league.
