Report: Bills to hire Rex Ryan as coach image

The Bills are set to hire Rex Ryan as head coach, according to multiple reports. NFL.com reporter Ian Rapaport reported Sunday morning that a source told him the Bills offered Ryan a deal “late last night.” The deal is still being finalized, but will be for five years , according to Rapaport.

The Bills, who have churned through seven head coaches in the past 15 seasons, hope they’ve finally found a keeper in Ryan.

The team interviewed Ryan for the second time Saturday night in Florida, where Bills owner Terry Pegula lives. The Falcons were expected to be the team to nab the former Jets coach, but the Bills moved more quickly and definitively and landed a coach who'd been in the same division hte past six seasons. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports this hire will set things in motion now for other positions to be quickly filled.

Ryan also had interviewed for the 49ers’ open coaching spot. He is expected to hire Greg Roman as offensive coordinator, Schefter reports.

The Jets fired Ryan, along with general manager John Idzik, Dec. 29 after a 4-12 season. Ryan went 50-52 in six seasons at the Jets’ helm.

The Bills have been mired in mediocrity in recent years. After making the playoffs 10 times between 1988 and 1999, the team has not made the postseason since.

Coach Doug Marrone opted out of his contract and is among the candidates for other openings around the league.
