Coach Jay Gruden told reporters after the workout that Foster stepped on offensive lineman Tyler Catalina's foot and "went down funny." Foster was getting an MRI Monday afternoon.
“Very concerning for sure," Gruden said, via NFL Media. "We’ll have to wait and see before I get too emotional about it.”
Foster's injury comes as the linebacker was gearing up for his first season in Washington. He had been with the 49ers since they drafted him in 2017 out of Alabama, but was released in November after he was arrested on domestic violence charges.
The Redskins were criticized for claiming Foster off waivers a few days later. It was expected that Foster would be suspended for the 2019 season, but the league opted to dock him his checks for the first two games of the season.
"I am grateful to the Washington Redskins and the NFL for giving me this second chance," Foster said in a statement after the NFL's decision in April. "I appreciate the support I have received from the league, my team, and my union to help me succeed. I want to thank commissioner Goodell for the time that he has spent with me and for his understanding of me as a person.
"I accept the NFL’s decision and want to say that I am truly sorry for my past actions and the people who may have been hurt by them. Going forward, I will follow the plan outlined for me and work hard to earn back the trust of my teammates, the NFL, NFL fans, and the community. I know that my success is all up to me, and I am committed to not letting you down."
Foster, 25, recorded 29 tackles in six games before San Francisco released him last season.
