Jack Del Rio spent Saturday speaking with the Oakland Raiders about their open coaching job. Sunday, Del Rio's full attention returns to the Denver Broncos.
He isn't alone is doing the tour of teams seeking field bosses. While defensive coordinator Del Rio was talking to the Raiders, offensive coordinator Adam Gase was wrapping up discussions with the Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears, according to The Denver Post. Friday, he talked to the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons.
Firings after completion of the 2014 NFL regular season left vacancies to fill. Given the Broncos' success the past two seasons, their coordinators were natural targets.
Del Rio has two significant qualities to offer the Raiders. He is from the Bay Area, and he has head coaching experience.
While the Jacksonville Jaguars are among the NFL's poorest teams, they were good under Del Rio. His Jags went to the playoffs twice, in 2005 and '07, and were 68-71. He also was 3-1 with the Broncos while coach John Fox was recovering from heart surgery last season.
Any team with a coaching vacancy would be exciting to have Del Rio, whose prowess helped the Broncos defense potent.
The Broncos earned a first-round bye as the NFL playoffs began. They are scheduled to play a wild-card winner at home on Jan. 11.
Tony Sparano was the Raiders' interim coach at season's end and is lobbying for a full-time job. CSN Bay Area says team officials have interviewed Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Schurmur and Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. Other interviews are expected.
While Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning would hate to lose his coordinator, he has said he supports Gase's efforts to become a head coach.
Bills GM Doug Whaley is leading the team's search, with owner Terry Pegula expected to have a major role in the decision.
In addition to Gase, the Bills were expected to interview Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and, according to The Buffalo News, San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich.
Best known as the backup quarterback to Jim Kelly during the Bills' four consecutive Super Bowl appearances, Reich also is expected to meet with the New York Jets, according to The News.
Starting Sunday, Broncos and Seahawks coordinators are off the market until their teams are eliminated from the playoffs. Remember, those teams met in the Super Bowl last year.
