Eagles vs. Panthers score, updates

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Carolina Panthers 28-23 in Charlotte on Thursday night to begin NFL Week 6. The lucky number for the Eagles was three. Quarterback Carson Wentz finished with three touchdowns on 16-for-30 passing for 222 yards.

Philadelphia's defense, meanwhile, forced Cam Newton into three interceptions. Turnovers deep in its own territory helped cost Carolina (4-2) the game. In the final minutes, the Eagles (5-1) needed a stop to secure the win, and the defense delivered. Newton's fourth-down pass to Christian McCaffrey with 1:16 left was incomplete.

IYER: Kuechly needs to think hard about future

Newton finished 28 for 52 with 239 yards.

Worse for Carolina, the loss of linebacker Luke Kuechly (concussion protocol) again raised concerns about Kuechly's long-term health. This is his third concussion in three seasons.

Eagles vs. Panthers: Score, updates, highlights

(All times Eastern)

FINAL SCORE: Eagles 28, Panthers 23.

11:48 p.m. — Panthers can't convert on fourth down. Eagles take over on downs and that will do it.

11:41 p.m. — The Eagles didn't get anything going on their last drive, so Newton and the Carolina offense get the ball back with 2:03 to go. No timeouts and the ball is on the Carolina 31-yard line.

11:31 p.m. — Philadelphia is forced to punt, giving the Panthers the ball back. In 10 plays, Newton is sacked, throws four incompletions and is intercepted for a third time.

11:19 p.m. — Touchdown, Panthers. Carolina scores on a 13-play, 75-yard drive that lasts almost seven minutes. After working down the field, Newton goes no-huddle and scrambles for 8 yards. Rivera challenges that Newton was down by contact before the end zone; the ruling stands. McCaffrey gets a 1-yard TD pass from Newton on the next play, and with 8:04 remaining the score is 28-23.

11:02 p.m. — Touchdown, Eagles. Philly recovers from a holding call that brought up a second-and-25. Wentz passes to Hollins for 20 yards and a first down. Wentz goes deep to Jeffery, who gets Philadelphia another 37 yards. Then Wentz throws another touchdown pass, this time to Agholor for 24 yards. The Eagles increase their lead 28-16.

End of the third quarter: Eagles 21, Panthers 16

10:51 p.m. — Eagles hold the advantage in rushing. They have 93 yards on 22 carries, compared to Carolina's 50 yards on 18 carries. The Eagles have also converted 5 of 12 third downs while Panthers have managed just 2 of 11 in the same category. Wentz has completed 14 of 26 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Newton has completed 18 of 32 passes for 146 yards, but he has two interceptions.

10:48 p.m. — Field goal, Panthers. Gano hits again and now the Eagles lead 21-16 with 3:23 to go in the third quarter.

10:43 p.m. — Philadelphia's defense has been sharp all night. It forces the Panthers into another three-and-out.

10:35 p.m.  — Field goal, Eagles. Elliott hits from 48 yards on Philly's next drive to make the score Eagles 21, Panthers 13.

10:25 p.m. —  Field goal, Panthers. Newton is intercepted again, this time by McLeod, but an interference penalty wipes out the pick and gives Carolina the ball back. The Panthers settle for a Gano 20-yarder with 11:19 left in the third quarter. The Eagles still lead 18-13.

10:18 p.m. — Touchdown, Eagles. Wentz goes to Ertz again for another score. Elliott's extra point try is good, but an illegal formation penalty leads to a retry. This time, the Eagles go for two and get them on Blount run up the middle.

10:15 p.m. —  Kuechly leaves to be evaluated for a concussion. More on Kuechly here

10:10 p.m. — The Panthers' first drive of the half ends in an interception. Newton's pass intended for Stewart is picked off by Robinson at the Carolina 17.

HALFTIME: Panthers 10, Eagles 10

9:40 p.m. — Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly collided with a lineman, and he is headed into the locker room.

9:35 p.m. — Touchdown, Eagles. Rasul Douglas sets up the score with a pick that puts the Eagles at the Panthers' 12. Wentz scrambles for a first-and-goal, then throws 1 yard to Ertz for the touchdown. After Elliott's extra point, the game is tied again, 10-10. Fletcher Cox was crucial on Douglas' INT. He pushed the pocket into Newton, hitting the quarterback’s arm.

9:20 p.m. — Touchdown, Panthers. After a 25-yard return from McCaffrey, a season-best, the Panthers need just four plays and less than two minutes to get into the end zone. Newton scores on a 16-yard touchdown run and Gano's extra point is good. The Panthers lead 10-3 with 10:34 remaining in the half.

9:10 p.m. — Panthers running backs have four carries for minus-8 yards after one quarter. This strategy isn't going to work well for Carolina.

9:07 p.m.  Here are some Eagles story lines to watch:

End of the first quarter: Panthers 3, Eagles 3

9:04 p.m. — You can also follow SN NFL writer Vinnie Iyer for news and insider information.

9:00 p.m. — Fozzy Whittaker is down with a right leg injury. He is carted off the field and into the locker room.

8:57 p.m. — Field goal, Panthers. Graham Gano matches Elliott with a 39-yarder, and the game is tied 3-3. Jordan Hicks had the big stop on third down.

8:50 p.m. —  Field goal, Eagles. After the fumble, the Eagles' defense forces a three-and-out. Wentz then finds Marcus Johnson for 16 yards, and the Birds are into Panthers territory. Jake Elliott comes in to kick a 50-yard field goal and the Eagles lead 3-0 with 6:57 left in the first quarter.

8:37 p.m. — Philadelphia's first drive does not end well. Wentz is sacked at the Carolina 40-yard line by Julius Peppers. He fumbles and Carolina recovers.
