Leonard Williams appears like he’ll be remaining in New York.
The 24-year-old defensive lineman’s name has been mentioned in multiple recent trade rumors. The team, however, is not planning to move him, according to a report from the New York Daily News, which cites unidentified league sources.
New York instead wants Williams to be part of its “rebuilding process” and is open to signing him to an extension, the report says.
Williams tallied 42 total tackles and five sacks in 16 games for New York last season. He also recorded two pass breakups.
The Jets selected Williams out of USC with the sixth pick in the 2015 draft. He has spent all four of his NFL seasons with the franchise and made the Pro Bowl in 2016.
The Jets finished 2018 with a 4-12 record and missed the playoffs for an eighth straight season. They fired former coach Todd Bowles in late December and hired Adam Gase to replace him.
