The opening salvo of the 2024 NFL season is on the horizon.

Another year, another soap opera. The upcoming NFL season promises to entice even the most timid of fanbases.

Such expressiveness should be revealed in the early moments of the season. Few matchups draw as much fanfare as the regular-season debut, an opportunity for stars young and new to introduce (or reintroduce) themselves to the spotlight.

Last season’s matchup pitted the upstart Lions against the reigning Super Bowl champion Lions. Despite Patrick Mahomes and an injured Travis Kelce’s best wishes, it was the Lions — led by Aidan Hutchinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Amon-Ra St. Brown — who took home the W, sparking an impressive campaign that saw Detroit win its first playoff game in over 30 years.

What could await us in this year’s regular season opener? The Sporting News gives you skinny on everything related to this season’s regular season debut.

What day does the 2024 NFL season start?

  • Date: Thursday, Sept. 5
  • Start time: 8:20 p.m. ET
  • Teams: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Baltimore Ravens

The 2024 NFL regular season will begin at 8:20 p.m. ET on Thursday, Sept. 5 as the Chiefs host the Baltimore Ravens in a 2024 AFC championship game rematch.

Kansas City defeated Baltimore 17-10 in the AFC championship game. The Chiefs' defense forced three Ravens turnovers during the contest while Patrick Mahomes completed 30 of 39 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown to emerge victoriously.

The Ravens are hoping to exact revenge for that disappointing defeat and will look to send the Chiefs to their second consecutive season-opening loss when September rolls around.

How to watch NFL 2024 season opener

The tradition of the season opener being broadcast on NBC continues to start the 2024 NFL season. However, all but one of the remaining Thursday night games will return to Amazon Prime Video after Week 1. The lone exception will be the NFL's Thanksgiving night game, which NBC will also broadcast.

For you cord-cutters out there, you're in luck. Fubo is the place to be. The streaming service carries NBC and also offers a free trial to new subscribers.
