AJ McCarron will return to the field sooner than expected.
The Bills originally believed the 27-year-old quarterback fractured his collarbone Friday in a preseason game against the Browns. But, that is not the case, according to a report from NFL Network.
McCarron is currently listed as day-to-day and will return to practice when his shoulder is no longer sore, the report says.
After a few days of testing, #Bills QB AJ McCarron received good news. It was not a hairline fracture, as I was told (@AdamSchefter on it 1st). McCarron is day-to-day and should practice when the soreness goes away. Sounded like he was in a lot of pain so unclear when that is.

McCarron is in a three-way race for the Bills starting quarterback spot with Nathan Peterman and Josh Allen. McDermott told ESPN on Sunday the competition will “pick up where (it) left off,” when McCarron returns healthy.
The former Alabama quarterback was originally selected by the Bengals in the fifth round of the 2014 draft. He spent his first four NFL seasons with Cincinnati before he signed a two-year contract with Buffalo in March.
McCarron has completed 10 of his 16 passes for 128 yards and no touchdowns in two preseason games with the Bills.
Buffalo announced Monday that Allen will start its third preseason game against the Bengals.
