Patriots draft picks 2023: Who did New England take? Full list of NFL Draft selections image

After a long run of dominance across the NFL, the Patriots have been relegated to mere mortals since Tom Brady left New England following the 2019 season. In some ways, the Logan Ryan pick-six that sealed a Titans' victory over the Evil Empire signified their powers being taken away.

Mac Jones entered and was quite successful in his rookie year under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Before year two began for Jones, McDaniels left for the bright lights of Vegas -- leaving the second-year quarterback with a couple of coaches who lacked experience on the offensive side of the ball in Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.

Those mistakes won't be replicated in 2023 as Bill Belichick brought back an old friend, Bill O'Brien, to coach the offense and right the ship that lacked direction over the last three seasons.

And since offense is the name of the game now, it is priority No. 1 in the potential Patriots' turnaround. While O'Brien is tasked with guiding the Patriots out of purgatory, it'll be the three days in April -- known as the NFL Draft -- that will determine whether he is successful.

      Patriots NFL draft needs

      • Offensive line: You can never have enough offensive linemen. That is especially true for teams like the Patriots that lack a mobile quarterback. Injuries hurt the group in 2022 as well as some inconsistent play with many shifts along the line over 18 weeks in 2022. Offensive tackle in particular is the hole here, but upgrading the trenches is always a priority, especially if it can be filled with versatile players. O'Brien and Belichick will need to address this spot if the team has any hope of competing in 2023 and beyond.
      • Wide receiver: Jakobi Meyers bid farewell to New England this offseason and was replaced by JuJu Smith-Schuster. While the latter is a nice addition, the position group still needs help. There is a lack of depth and top-end talent in the receiving game, something that O'Brien will definitely need in his new-look Patriots offense. One quick look around the NFL will demonstrate the importance of having those playmakers. Travis Kelce, Stefon Diggs, Ja'Marr Chase and many more have become difference-makers. Who is that guy for Jones and the Patriots? Maybe we'll find out in the draft.
      • Tight end: As long as Belichick is coaching this team, tight end will continue to be a topic of discussion. When O'Brien last ran the Patriots' offense in 2011, he had Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez at the position. Now he has Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki. In a loaded tight end class, we can't rule out the chance that New England tries to duplicate the success of old. On a team that lacks firepower offensively, any port in the storm will work quite nicely.
