Matt Schaub has a new team and old role: strictly as a backup quarterback.

The Ravens signed the 33-year-old free agent on Tuesday, according to multiple reports. Per the NFL Network, it's a one-year deal worth $3 million. The move comes just two weeks after Schaub was released by the Raiders.

In choosing Baltimore over other suitors, including Tennessee, Schaub has zero to little chance of starting in 2015. That's because he's now the No. 2 to Joe Flacco, who has started every regular-season and playoff game for the Ravens since being drafted in 2008.

Only Eli Manning (178) and Philip Rivers (153) have a longer active streak of consecutive games started than Flacco's 127.

Although Schaub would have had a chance to compete for a short-term No. 1 gig with the Titans or elsewhere, the Ravens needed a seasoned reserve alternative to 2014 sixth-rounder Keith Wenning. It doesn't get more ideal than the 6-5, 235-pound Schaub, who stands right up there with the 6-6, 245-pound Flacco.

Schaub didn't start a game for Oakland, but once was the NFL's season passing leader through his 88 starts with Houston. Schaub had his best years under coach Gary Kubiak, who coordinated Flacco and the Ravens' offense last season.

Now Schaub gets to join Flacco in working with new offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, who just had a successful reclamation project with another aging lanky passer, Josh McCown. It's the best role for Schaub in this stage of his career, rather than being further battered with another bad team. Schaub likely won't need to see the field for the Ravens, but his personality meshes well with Flacco as a willing backup.

Flacco's previous top backup, Tyrod Taylor, left the Ravens for the Bills as a free agent earlier this month.
