Lane Kiffin could be headed back to the NFL and the Bay area.

The Alabama offensive coordinator is considered the front-runner for the same position with the 49ers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Kiffin would join newly signed head coach Jim Tomsula.

Before Kiffin's team played in the Sugar Bowl, he addressed the media about whether he'd stay at Alabama.

"Yes. Definitely," he said. "I think that we've still got a lot of stuff that we can do better."

Kiffin's last experience in the pros was in Oakland, where he went 5-15 with the Raiders before being fired after four games in 2008. He's also been a head coach at Tennessee and USC.

Schefter also reports that Colts special assistant to the head coach Rob Chudzinski is being considered for the 49ers' position.
