New 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan will not hire an offensive coordinator, and plans to call his own plays next season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Shanahan, who coordinated the NFL's highest-scoring offense last season, has lots of experience leading offenses: He had OC stints with the Texans (2008-2009), Redskins (2010-2013), Browns (2014) and Falcons (2015-16).

Rapoport noted that Shanahan intends on hiring Falcons offensive assistant Mike McDaniel as the team's "run-game guru," and Rich Scangarello as the quarterbacks coach.

The Falcons scored 540 points in the regular season, tied with the 2000 Rams for the seventh-highest scoring offense in NFL history. The 49ers named Shanahan their head coach on Monday. At 37, Shanahan is the second-youngest head coach in the NFL behind the Rams’ Sean McVay, 30.

It's common for head coaches to call their team's plays, though Shanahan's decision to not even hire an offensive coordinator is a bold one. Fixing a 49ers offense that finished 27th in the league in points per game (19.3) and 31st yards per game (308.1) would be challenging for anyone, let alone a first-year coach without a starting quarterback.
