In trying to regain his spot as the No. 1 quarterback in Washington, Kirk Cousins is trying to get any edge on Robert Griffin III by running drills with Jon Gruden in Tampa.

Cousins is working with Gruden, a former head coach in Tampa Bay and Oakland, along with teammate Alfred Morris and former Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman and at Carrollwood Day School.

Under the collective bargaining agreement, NFL players are prohibited from working with their current coaches at the team facility during the offseason, but says nothing about training with a coach's influential family members. Jay Gruden went 4-12 in his first season with the Redskins.

Cousins told the media in December that if the Redskins name Griffin the starting quarterback for next season, he wants a trade. Cousins added if there isn't a QB competition, there's no point in him staying.

The third-year quarterback started five games in 2014 and threw nine interceptions, finishing with a 1-4 record. He was eventually benched for Week 8 in favor of Colt McCoy.
