The Detroit Lions placed running back Kerryon Johnson on the injured reserve due to a knee injury.

Detroit made the announcement on Tuesday after Johnson underwent a procedure for an injury suffered against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7.

Johnson will not be eligible to return until Week 16 at the earliest.

The 22-year-old's absence will deal a significant blow to the Lions' offensive firepower, as Johnson leads Detroit in rushing yards (308) and rushing touchdowns (2) in 2019.

The remaining three running backs on the Lions' roster — Ty Johnson, J.D. McKissick, and Tra Carson — have amassed a measly 206 yards on the ground and no scores.

Detroit (2-3-1) have long had a pass-oriented offense but could now become a true one-dimensional team.

The Lions will host the New York Giants in Week 8 on Sunday.
