Dolphins to hold moment of silence in honor of late Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez image

Tragedy struck not only Miami on Sunday morning, but the entire sports world when news broke of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez's death in a boating accident off Miami Beach. He was 24.

The Dolphins, who host the Browns on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, were planning to hold a moment of silence in honor of Fernandez before kickoff, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter (via Sports Illustrated).

According to reports, Fernandez was one of three people killed in the accident. The Marlins' game Sunday against the Braves was cancelled.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez," the Marlins said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."

The Dolphins' organization released condolences of its own via Twitter.

Fernandez was a two-time All-Star who won the 2016 National League Rookie of the Year award. His final career statistics will be 38-17 with a 2.58 ERA and 589 strikeouts. Earlier this season, Sporting News ranked Fernandez as the 36th best player in baseball.
