Jason Witten restructures contract with Cowboys to save cap space, report says image

Jason Witten said before the season he’s "all in” on the Cowboys, and as the company man he is, the veteran tight end has restructured his contract with the team.

According to NFL Media, the 14-year pro Witten was due $6.5 million in salary this season, but the Cowboys turned $5.5 million of it into a signing bonus. The restructuring created an extra $3 million in cap space for the Cowboys. It also means Witten has a cap number of more than $12 million next year but he'll likely restructure again in what would be his age-35 season.

In February, Witten acknowledged he’d like to play another five to seven years if he could, hopefully with Tony Romo under center. One of Romo's favorite connections, Witten hasn't missed a game since 2003 but he has also has never reached a conference championship game.

A 10-time Pro Bowl performer, Witten had 77 catches for 713 yards last season, despite Romo's absence for much of the season. With Romo again sidelined by injury, Witten will have to hook up with rookie Dak Prescott on Sunday when the Cowboys host the rival Giants to begin the season.
