For the first time since the 2021 NFL Draft, Jacksonville does not own the top overall pick.

Moreover, this is the first draft since 2018 the Jaguars don't have a top-10 pick. Needless to say, the future looks bright under second-year coach Doug Pederson and quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The question now: How do the Jaguars build off their 9-8 season?

Jacksonville's 2023 draft starts with the 24th overall pick, where arguably all the top blue-chip talent will already be gone. But a team in Jacksonville's position doesn't need immediate game-changers like Lawrence, or last year's No. 1 pick Travon Walker. Instead, the Jags need quality additions to a team hoping to make another playoff run.

The Jags made some notable free-agent signings this offseason, but it appears the draft will have more of an impact on Jacksonville's team this year. Here's how the Jags figure to address their needs in the draft:

Jaguars NFL Draft needs

  • Offensive tackle: Jacksonville let Jawaan Taylor walk in free agency and, even with free agent additions Chandler Brewer and Josh Wells, is in need of a quality swing tackle. Oklahoma's Anton Harrison or Tennessee's Darnell Wright are potential options at No. 24 overall.
  • Nickelback: The Jaguars have a need for a versatile defensive back in the draft, one that could be filled by Alabama's Brian Branch. He can play safety or nickel corner, the latter of which he played the majority of the time in his last season at Alabama. His skills as a blitzer, tackler and cover man make him an enticing option if he's available at 24.
  • Defensive tackle: The Jaguars' defensive line proved sufficiently deep and adept at stopping the run last season, even if the group contributed to overall disappointing sack totals. But this unit could use additional depth with veteran Corey Peters retiring and Dawuane Smoot — who suffered a torn ACL in Week 16 — still working to re-sign with the team as an unrestricted free agent.
