The Chargers and Dolphins enter "Sunday Night Football" with a chip on their shoulder after suffering disappointing losses last week.

The Chargers lost to the Raiders 27-20 to drop to .500 on the season, a disappointing result given the Raiders' struggles this year. The Dolphins, meanwhile, lost to the 49ers 33-17 in a game coach Mike McDaniel undoubtedly wanted against his former team.

There is a bigger backdrop to this game, however, and it's the AFC playoff picture. The Dolphins (8-4) are the sixth seed entering Sunday, while the Chargers (6-6) are eighth and on the outside looking in. The Chargers didn't come into this season expecting to be a .500 team, so Brandon Staley may be feeling a little hot around the collar. The Dolphins, meanwhile, have exceeded expectations, thanks in no small part to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle complementing each other in support of Tua Tagovailoa.

The winner of this game will inch that much closer to a playoff spot, but it's hard to argue against the idea that the Chargers need this game. They're running out of runway in 2022; if they want to catch the AFC East teams that are fighting each other for spots, they'll have to begin against the Dolphins on "Sunday Night Football."
