Chargers center Nick Hardwick officially announced his retirement from the NFL and followed it up with a hand-written, heartfelt note to fans and the organization.

In the note, he expresses his love for the sport, his fans and the Chargers and promised to always be a supporter of the team.

"I vow to support the San Diego Chargers unconditionally until the day I pass," Hardwick wrote. "I compel you, Chargers blood, to join me with the steely resolve that will be required from this city to ensure that we can accomplish what every one of us wants and deserves to accomplish; a Super Bowl Championship, right here, in America’s Finest City, San Diego."

Hardwick, an 11-year veteran, was drafted in the third round out of Purdue in the same class with Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers. The two worked together for the majority of Hardwick's career. During Hardwick's 136 games as a starter, Rivers was with him for 108.

Hardwick had already stated the 2014 season would be his last, but it was cut short after Week 1 when neck problems forced him to miss the rest of the season.

Hardwick's health and impending retirement became a hot topic among Chargers fans as his weight plummeted. Reportedly, he dropped from 305 pounds to 208.

Rivers honored Hardwick during Week 2, wearing his No. 61 helmet number instead of No. 17.
