Hopes soared when Eagles training camp opened as Carson Wentz was a full participant, but it’s no lock he’ll start Week 1 for Philadelphia against the Falcons.
Though he’s said his knee feels “really good,” Wentz hasn’t participated in 11-on-11 drills in weeks and hasn’t been cleared for contact.
"I obviously would love to be out there," Wentz told SportsRadio 94WIP on Tuesday when asked about his Week 1 outlook. "That’s been my goal all offseason, ever since the injury. It’s gonna be close. It’s gonna be close. I’m still eyeing that date, but at the end of the day it’s not just my decision. There’s coaches and doctors that really have the final say."
Wentz has been rehabbing from a torn ACL he suffered in a game Dec. 10. He then had to watch as backup Nick Foles led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl championship. Wentz, 25, was enjoying a breakout season before his injury with almost 3,300 yards passing and 33 TD passes in 13 games.
“Right now it’s kind of the ‘What if’ game and I don’t really like to play that game," Wentz said. "I’ve done everything I could up to this point to be ready and to get my knee as strong as can be in this amount of time. I think the chips will fall where they’re supposed to fall.”
Philadelphia continues the preseason Thursday in a Super Bowl rematch against the Patriots.
