Cardinals QB depth chart: Trace McSorley enters vs. Broncos after Colt McCoy suffers concussion image

This section has been updated from a previous version.

The Cardinals' quarterback room has suffered major blows in back-to-back weeks, with Colt McCoy exiting Sunday's game against the Broncos a week after Kyler Murray tore his ACL during "Monday Night Football."

McCoy entered Arizona's Week 14 loss to the Patriots immediately after Murray's injury and got the start Sunday, but he was diagnosed with a concussion and ruled out for the day after diving head-first on a run.

McCoy's injury isn't nearly as severe as Murray's, but it's not a guarantee that he'll be able to clear concussion protocols in time for Arizona's Christmas night game against the Buccaneers. That leaves the Cardinals' quarterback depth in dire straits as their lost season inches toward a close.

The Sporting News breaks down the Cardinals' quarterback depth chart with Murray and McCoy both sidelined.

Who is the Cardinals' backup QB?

Colt McCoy has served as the Cardinals' primary backup, having taken over for the team previously this season in a two-week stretch in Weeks 10 and 11. However, with McCoy out, Trace McSorley is next up on the Cardinals' depth chart.

McSorley entered Week 15 having thrown only 24 NFL passes, including 14 with the Cardinals this year in mop-up duty. A sixth-round pick out of Penn State by the Ravens in 2019, McSorley doesn't have an NFL start under his belt and could receive his first extended regular season action with McCoy out.

The emergency backup to McSorley is RB Corey Clement, but expect the Cardinals to add another quarterback during the week even if McCoy is able to clear concussion protocols before Christmas.

Murray is the top quarterback on the Cardinals' depth chart, followed by McCoy. The No. 3 player on the depth chart is Trace McSorley, a fourth-year player who was rostered two seasons for the Ravens in 2019 and 2020; he was a member of the practice squad in 2021 before joining the Cardinals in 2022.
