Cardinals first-year receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown was arrested on charges of criminal speeding, per multiple reports.

A search conducted by The Sporting News of Maricopa County inmate records confirms the arrest.

Brown, playing his first season in Arizona after spending the first three years of his NFL career in Baltimore. Arizona radio station KMVP-FM — citing confirmation from the Arizona Department of Public Safety — reported that Brown was arrested at 7:05 a.m. local time driving southbound on state Route 101 in a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane.

What is criminal speeding?

Arizona state law defines 'criminal speeding' as the result of one of the three driving infractions:

  • Exceeding 85 mph
  • Exceeding posted speed limit by 20 mph
  • Exceeding 35 mph approaching school zone

Maricopa county records indicate Brown's speed exceeded 85mph.

KPNX12 Sports reports, citing court records, that "Brown was driving nearly 126 mph in a 65 mph zone when he was pulled over by a DPS trooper."

What is the penalty for criminal speeding?

According to the Heath Law Firm — a criminal defense firm focusing on DUI, felony and misdemeanor defense based out of Gilbert, Az. — the penalty for criminal speeding is as follows:

Criminal speeding is a Class 3 misdemeanor. The maximum penalty is 30 days in jail, a $500 fine plus an 83 percent surcharge, and up to one year of probation.

What's next for Marquise Brown?

The Cardinals acknowledged the arrest on Wednesday, releasing a statement:

We are aware of the situation regarding Hollywood Brown and have reported it to the NFL office as required. We will comment further as appropriate.

KMPV-FM reported that Brown was not present at the media portion of Arizona's practice on Wednesday. He was moved to the team's active roster on Monday after recovering from a hamstring injury on the non-football injury list.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said he hoped WR Marquise Hollywood Brown could be “full go” next Monday.

It's unknown if Brown will face team discipline, in addition to any levied by the legal system.
