Are the Buccaneers coming full circle with the Testaverde family?
The Buccaneers signed the son of their former No. 1 draft pick Vinny Testaverde, according to ESPN, which cited unidentified sources.
Quarterback Vincent Testaverde tried out with the team in May and signed with the team Sunday.
The younger Testaverde spent last year at the University of Albany, where he threw for 1,714 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight starts. He originally started his collegiate career at Texas Tech before transferring to Miami (Fla.), his father's alma mater, then to Albany.
Vinny Testaverde was the NFL's top draft pick in 1987 and still holds the Bucs franchise record in career passing yards (14,820) from his time with the team (1987-92). His 21-year career saw him move from Tampa Bay to the Browns (who relocated to become the Ravens during his tenure), then on to the Jets, Cowboys, Patriots and finally the Panthers.
He retired at 44 at the end of the 2007 season with two Pro Bowl selections under his belt.
Vincent Testaverde's signing likely comes to add preseason depth because Tampa Bay rookie quarterback Nick Fitzgerald recently was placed on the active/non-football injury list because of a hamstring injury.
Jameis Winston is expected to be the team's starter in September.
