Bears lose QB Brian Hoyer to broken left arm (UPDATED) image

The Bears are down to their third-string quarterback after Bryan Hoyer left Thursday's game in the second quarter with a broken left arm.

Hoyer was crushed by Packers outside linebackers Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews while dropping back to pass on a third-and-6 at the 50-yard line.

Peppers and Matthews converged on Hoyer and Matthews' helmet went right into Hoyer's left arm. Hoyer tried to use his left arm to brace his fall, but immediately grabbed his lower forearm while writhing on the Lambeau Field turf.

Bears guard Kyle Long tried to help Hoyer to his feet, but Hoyer collapsed back to the ground. Long also did not come back for the next series, remaining on the sideline, and Hoyer was taken to get X-rays. The Bears announced Hoyer would not return to the game.

Bears coach John Fox later told CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson that Hoyer had broken his arm.

The Packers held a 3-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Hoyer was 4 of 11 for 49 yards as the Bears had just 58 yards of total offense. Fourth-year quarterback Matt Barkley replaced Hoyer with 6:34 remaining in the half.

The Bears were already without starting quarterback Jay Cutler because of a thumb injury.

This article has been updated with Fox saying Hoyer suffered a broken arm.
