The Vikings lost yet another key starter to their team Monday when they were forced to place right tackle Andre Smith on injured reserve.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said in his Monday news conference that Smith would undergo surgery Tuesday to repair his injured triceps. Smith originally said on Friday that a trip to the injured reserve would not be necessary, but surgery ended that speculation.

With Smith out, the undefeated Vikings (5-0) have lost four projected starters from the beginning of the regular season, with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, running back Adrian Peterson and left tackle Matt Kalil also on IR.

Zimmer said the team plans to work out free-agent tackle Jake Long — a four-time Pro Bowler who was selected No. 1 overall out of Michigan in 2008. Long last played for the Falcons in 2015.
