49ers release Vic Fangio, two others from contracts, report says image

The 49ers have released coaches Vic Fangio, Ed Donatell and Jim Leavitt from their contracts.

Vic Fangio was considered a candidate to replace Jim Harbaugh as the head coach of the 49ers. Now he's looking for work.

The defensive coordinator was released from his contract on Thursday, according to Comcast Sportsnet. Also let go were secondary coach Ed Donatell, who was also considered a candidate for the head coaching job, and linebackers coach Jim Leavitt, the former head coach at South Florida.

Fangio was the first candidate to interview for the head coaching job and will be sought after as a defensive coordinator. He reportedly has an interview lined up with the Redskins. Fangio shares the same agent with Redskins coach Jay Gruden and Fangio's family lives in Maryland.

The 49ers promoted defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to head coach on Wednesday.
