The 49ers are no longer undefeated, but San Francisco had a chance to win Monday night's game against Seattle in overtime with a field goal.
The team sent out Chase McLaughlin, who was playing in the 27-24 loss in place of an injured Robbie Gould. He had played well all night, as he was 3-of-3 on field goal attempts (43 yards, 39, 47) and 1-of-1 on extra points. In fact, the game reached overtime thanks to McLaughlin's 47-yard kick at the end of regulation.
But when he lined up for a field goal attempt from the same distance in the extra period, he did not have as much luck.

McLaughlin's kick was shanked so poorly it landed in the Levi's Stadium tunnel.
49ers beat writer Jennifer Lee Chan happened to be standing in that tunnel and filming the missed kick when it landed. From this perspective, we can see the football nearly hits a man who surely wasn't expecting a football to be hurling at his face.
Um.... this is not where the ball is supposed to go. pic.twitter.com/Ie5EfA9Mq8

The miss wasn't the end of the world for San Francisco, however. After the Seahawks got the ball back, the 49ers defense stepped up and held Seattle to a 3-and-out. But when the 49ers went back on offense, they couldn't move the ball downfield and had to punt it right back. The Seahawks eventually won with a field goal of their own.
While McLaughlin was mocked on social media after the game, his miss wasn't the reason the 49ers lost.
