The 49ers landed their new defensive coordinator Thursday, promoting tight ends coach Eric Mangini, according to ESPN.

Mangini joined San Francisco in 2013 as a senior offensive consultant after head coaching stops with the Jets (2006-08) and Browns (2009-2010). His name gained recognition while on the Patriots staff from 2000-05, serving as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2005 before going to the the Jets.

He agreed to a three-year contract in his new position, ESPN reported.

The 49ers, who parted ways with Jim Harbaugh after the regular season, hired Jim Tomsula as the team’s new head coach earlier in January. The offensive coordinator position is still available with Lane Kiffin as a rumored front-runner for the job. Tony Sparano was hired as the team’s new tight ends coach earlier Thursday.
