NFL coaching rumors: Josh McDaniels rejects 49ers job, prefers to stay with Patriots image

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has turned down the head coaching job with the 49ers to remain in New England.

McDaniels had emerged as a favorite for the 49ers job in recent days, with NBC Sports noting he had even started contacting potential assistant coaches. But that same report noted he had serious concerns about uprooting his family from New England — McDaniels has four young children — to move across the country and take the helm of a team that has churned through three head coaches in the two years.

TheMMQB.com confirmed McDaniels' decision Monday.

IYER: 49ers just saw what they can get from Kyle Shanahan as coach

"At this time, it's best for my family and myself to remain here," McDaniels said.

The 40-year-old McDaniels had previously interviewed for the head coaching positions with the Rams and Jaguars.

So where does that leave the 49ers?

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says their choice is down to Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan and Seattle assistant Tom Cable, who once coached across the bay in Oakland. The Mercury News reports Shanahan is now the favorite to land the job.
