The latest player to be Mr. Irrelevant learned the news via a former Mr. Irrelevant.

Chandler Harnish, the final pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, announced Arizona's selection of Louisville tight end Gerald Christian Saturday to close to draft. Harnish, a quarterback from Northern Illinois, was selected by the Colts as the 253rd overall pick in 2012. He spent two seasons in Indianapolis before spending last season in Minnesota and joining Arizona in March.

As Mr. Irrelevant No. 40, Christian now joins Harnish in a fraternity that originated in 1976, when former NFL receiver Paul Salata thought the final pick in the draft deserved the same pomp and circumstance as the top pick in the draft, especially because the final pick would likely have a much shorter football career.

The first Mr. Irrelevant "winner" was Dayton wide receiver Kelvin Kirk, whom the Steelers made the 487th overall pick that year. Kirk never played in the NFL, but spent seven seasons in the Canadian Football League.

Other players have gone from Mr. Irrelevant to having relevant NFL careers.

Bill Kenney was the final pick by the Dolphins in 1978. While the Dolphins cut him, Kenney was picked up by the Chiefs and played in Kansas City for 10 seasons, earning a Pro Bowl berth in 1983. He finished his career with over 17,000 passing yards with 105 touchdowns and 86 interceptions.

Former Kentucky linebacker Marty Moore was the final pick in 1994 and spent seven of his eight years in New England, winning a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2001. Moore was the first Mr. Irrelevant to play in a Super Bowl.

The Bears held the final pick in consecutive years and found a gem in both 1999 and 2000. Penn fullback Jim Finn was the last selected in 1999 and started 45 games for the Bears in six seasons. Northwestern State safety Mike Green was 2000's Mr. Irrelevant and spent six years in Chicago, starting a total of 48 games for three teams during an eight-year career.

Idaho linebacker David Vobora became a starter as a rookie for the Rams in 2008 and spent three of his four NFL seasons in St. Louis before spending his final season with the Seahawks. He started a total of 16 games in three years with the Rams, and was the first Mr. Irrelevant to start as a rookie since Moore in 1994.

The Chiefs took South Carolina kicker Ryan Succop in 2009 and he set league and team kicking records as a rookie. Succop spent five seasons with the Chiefs before joining Tennessee last year. He is one of four Mr. Irrelevant's currently on NFL rosters, joining Harnish, Rams tight end Justice Cunningham – selected by the Colts in 2013 – and last year's final pick, Texans safety Lonnie Ballentine, selected 256th overall out of Memphis.

Mr. Irrelevant is treated to an entire week of festivities, now sponsored by the Foundation for the Undefeated. This year's Irrelevant Week is slated for July 7-12 in Newport Beach, Calif. A banquet in Christian's honor will be held at the Balboa Bay Resort, the original site of Mr. Irrelevant. Christian will be presented the Lowsman Trophy, given annually to Mr. Irrelevant. The week also includes a parade and concludes with a trip to Disneyland and Angel Stadium.

Salata said via the Undefeated website that "he is looking forward to "another successful week of bringing one of football’s most cherished heroes to see all of what Newport Beach has to offer."

The next step for Christian will be trying to be relevant in the NFL.
