TCU and Baylor split the Big 12 championship in 2014 with 11-1 records, but all four College Football Playoff teams played in a conference championship game last season.

CBSSports.com’s Dennis Dodd reported that conference championship restrictions could be relaxed by 2016, which would open that door.

Should the Big 12 open it? TCU coach Gary Patterson said yes on the Big 12 teleconference Tuesday, but only if it makes a difference with the College Football Playoff committee’s selection process.

“I still don’t understand why it’s needed if you have a committee picking the four best teams,” Patterson said. “If it’s that important for the conference, then yeah, let’s do it.”

Briles said he doesn’t know if playing TCU in a conference championship game would have made a difference in 2014. The Bears defeated the Horned Frogs 61-58 in the regular season.

“If you can go undefeated in our league, you'll be in the College Football Playoffs,” Briles said. “That's the bottom line.”

Briles didn’t say whether or not he was in favor of a championship game.

“Let’s figure out what’s best for the Big 12, and we’ll roll with it,” Briles said.
