Minnesota plans to "Row The Boat" next season with P.J. Fleck at the helm.

The 36-year-old coach is leaving Western Michigan to take over Minnesota's program, WMU athletic director Kathy Beauregard tweeted Friday and Fleck, via the university, confirmed later in a video posted to Twitter.

"We are completely honored to be your new football coach at the University Minnesota," Fleck said, punctuating the brief video with a Minnesota rousing "Ski-U-Mah!"

Fleck will replace Tracy Claeys, who was fired despite a 9-4 season.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Fleck will get a five-year contract expected to be worth about $3.5 million annually, and an introductory news conference is expected to be held later Friday.

At Western Michigan, Fleck became nationally known for taking a dormant MAC program to a Cotton Bowl berth in four seasons. Many consider Fleck an elite recruiter and his high energy personality brought a lot of attention to the Broncos.

Fleck previously coached with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a receivers coach following stints at Northern Illinois, Rutgers and Ohio State.

A sexual assault scandal involving the Gophers' football program played a big part in Claeys' dismissal.

Claeys tweeted he’d “never been more proud of our kids” after players announced initially they would boycott the Holiday Bowl. The protest — eventually canceled — was intended to support the players allegedly involved in the scandal.
