N.C. State's 16-12 loss to Maryland in the Duke's Mayo Bowl now carries an off-the-field controversy, courtesy of longtime Wolfpack radio play-by-play announcer Gary Hahn.
Hahn was suspended indefinitely after the game for a making an objectionable remark while updating listeners on the score of the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

"Amongst all the illegal aliens in El Paso, it's UCLA 14 and Pittsburgh six," Hahn said.

Hahn's suspension was announced less than 90 minutes after the Duke's Mayo Bowl ended.
"Learfield has suspended Wolfpack Sports Network play-by-play announcer Gary Hahn from his agreement indefinitely following comments made during today's Duke's Mayo Bowl radio broadcast," Wolfpack Sports Properties general manager Kyle Winchester said in a statement through the university.

Hahn has served as N.C. State's radio play-by-play announcer for football and men's basketball since 1991. He had not made a public statement as of the time of publication of this article.
El Paso has become a flash point in the national debate over immigration. The city borders Mexico and has been the focus of recent legal battles over federal policy amid a large number of border crossings by people into the United States.
