Former Minnesota and Rutgers’ quarterback Philip Nelson thought he’d found a new home — but he’ll have to keep looking.
Nelson will not be playing at South Alabama, according to a statement released by associate athletic director Brian Fremund.

"In reference to your earlier communication in regard to Philip Nelson, he will not be a member of the University of South Alabama football program. He remains a recruitable student-athlete, however, so no further comment may be made by members of the athletic department and coaching staff at this time."
Nelson began his career at Minnesota, where he played 19 games in two seasons. He transferred to Rutgers, but was kicked off the team in May 2014 after he was involved in a fight that left a Minnesota State player with a brain injury.
Nelson has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
