Miami (6-4) took a 16-0 lead in the first half with the help of touchdowns by Duke Johnson and Clive Walford. The Hurricanes held a 23-10 lead late in the third quarter, but the Seminoles cut that with a 11-yard touchdown pass from Jameis Winston to Karlos Williams on a pass tipped by Miami linebacker Tyriq McCord.
Florida State trailed 26-23 with 5:11 remaining and marched the go-ahead touchdown on a 26-yard touchdown run by Dalvin Cook with 3:05 remaining. Jalen Ramsey sealed the win with an interception in the final minute.
