Who will be next Boomers coach? Washington Wizards assistant reportedly favourite to fill position image

The Boomers are still searching for their next head coach, following the departure of Sydney Kings coach Brian Goorjian.

Goorjian, who led the team to their first major tournament medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, stood down following a disappointing 2024 Paris Olympic campaign, ending his second stint as Boomers boss.

Since then, the hunt has been on for his successor, with plenty of seasoned names from both Australia and abroad being thrown around - but it appears that a favourite has finally emerged.

Who will be next Boomers coach?

It's been nearly six months since Brian Goorjian stepped down as head coach of the Australian national basketball team, but it looks as if the team has finally settled on his replacement.

The search for the next Boomers head coach was extensive, involving veteran Australian coaches like Dean Vickerman and Trevor Gleeson, former NBL coaches such as Will Weaver, and even current NBA coach Quinn Snyder.

But according to radio host Andy Maher - who cohosts 'Andy and Gazey' with Australian basketball great Andrew Gaze - the Boomers next coach will be former NBL player and current NBA assistant coach Adam Caporn.

"Did you hear anything about the head coaching position? Because I’m being led to believe that it is done and dusted and a decision has been arrived and a man by the name of Adam Caporn will be the next coach of the Boomers," Maher said on his SEN show.

Caporn, a former Boomers assistant coach, is currently part of the Washington Wizards coaching staff, moving to America's capitol this season after two years as a Brooklyn Nets assistant, and a season as the head coach of G-League team the Long Island Nets in 2021.

He will take over the reins from current interim coach Jacob Chance, the Melbourne United assistant who is leading the Boomers during their current FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.
