The Rookie of the Year race is being led by Ben Simmons currently, but while most are paying attention to Simmons, Jason Tatum and Lonzo Ball's struggles, Donovan Mitchell has been balling.

The Jazz rookie guard finished with 41 points, a Jazz rookie record in Utah's 114-108 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

29 of Mitchell's 41 points came in the second half when his team needed them most. The mark is now the highest by any rookie this season.

"I was speechless," Mitchell told Kristen Kenney of AT&T Sportsnet after the game.

"You all will probably see me smiling from 35 (points) and up."

The NBA announced the "Rookies of the Month" on Saturday (AEDT). Ben Simmons and Kyle Kuzma walked away with the honours for the month of October, but Mitchell has started off the month of December with a bang.
