Every time the Cleveland Cavaliers have taken the court since Feb. 10, 2012, Tristan Thompson has been there with them. That streak will end Wednesday in Boston.

Thompson sprained his right thumb in Wednesday's (AEST) game against the Magic and will not play in at least the next two games, Thursday at the Celtics and Saturday against the Hawks, the team announced.

Thompson's run of 447 consecutive games played is a franchise record and the longest active streak in the NBA, and his injury could hardly have come at a worse time for Cleveland.

The Celtics game is a showdown for first place in the Eastern Conference, with both teams sitting at 50-27 entering the contest.

Cleveland have won three in a row entering the game.

Thompson, 26, is averaging 8.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
