According to ESPN.com, Detroit hired former Grizzlies executive Ed Stefanski to a three-year contract as a senior adviser responsible for overhauling the franchise's basketball operations.
His role will be directly tied to helping the organization with the general manager and coaching positions.
"I'm going to Detroit to meet with all the employees and I am going to listen to all their thoughts and visions," Stefanski said.
"And then I am going to give advice to our owner Tom Gores on how we are going to structure things going forward. The big thing right now, though, is that we need a head coach and a GM. Those will be two items that we will probably do simultaneously."
The report states that Detroit's top coaching candidate is Dwane Casey, who despite being named NBCA Coach of the Year, was fired by the Raptors earlier this month for losing to LeBron James and the Cavaliers in the playoffs.
Former Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey will be a primary target of the Pistons coaching search, league sources tell ESPN. Full story soon on site. https://t.co/GpB9Qs9qXt

Jeff Bower is still the Pistons general manager, but there have been a number of ex-players and executives linked with taking over the position. Stefanski will be the one to assess all of that.
Despite trading with the Clippers for Blake Griffin midseason, the Pistons finished 39-43, missing the playoffs as the ninth overall seed in the Eastern Conference.
