Six players scored in double figures for the Timberwolves led by 23 points apiece from Karl-Anthony Towns and Jaden McDaniels.
Nikola Jokic (34) and Jamal Murray (35) combined for 69 of the Nuggets' 90 points, but their supporting cast struggled to make shots on the night.
The Nuggets are now the sixth-straight regining champions to not advance beyond the second round the following season as the Timberwolves set up a date with the Dallas Mavericks.
