The current NBA season isn't even over yet, but rumors regarding free agency are already starting to swirl.
Derrick Rose will become a free agent for the first time in his career this offseason after spending his first eight seasons with the Bulls and Knicks. According to ESPN.com, the Timberwolves view the 28-year-old point guard as a potential free-agent acquisition this summer.
The move wouldn't make much sense for Minnesota, which signed point guard Ricky Rubio to a four-year, $55 million extension in 2015. He has two years left on that contract.
Minnesota also selected Kris Dunn with the No. 5 overall pick in last year's draft. The 6-4 former Providence star was expected to supplant Rubio at some point last season, but he struggled to adapt, while Rubio played well.
Rose would provide the Timberwolves with more of a scoring threat at the point guard position, but he is a huge injury risk at this stage in his career.
Last season, his lone year in New York, Rose averaged 18 points and 4.4 assists per game. But he played in just 64 games, and has not been healthy for a full season since 2010-2011 when he played 81 games with the Bulls.
Rose suffered a season-ending meniscus injury this year that required surgery.
The 2011 MVP is already expected to be fully recovered after being given a 3-6 week recovery timeline.
Rumors will likely continue to swirl for the next couple months before players actually sign on the dotted line, but Minnesota would likely have to trade Rubio before signing Rose.
