Marcus Smart injury update: Celtics guard available for Game 2 vs. 76ers with chest contusion image

The Celtics were stunned by the Joel Embiid-less 76ers in Game 1, falling 119-115 to drop the series opener.

James Harden turned back the clock to his 2018 MVP season, exploding for 45 points and a game-winning three-pointer to help Philadelphia steal one on the road.

Boston will look to bounce back at home in Game 2, but there was a chance it would be without former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart. Smart suffered a chest injury during Game 1 and his status was up in the air for Game 2.

The Sporting News has you covered with the latest updates on his injury below.

What is Marcus Smart's injury?

While the exact play where Smart suffered his injury is unclear, he was seen grabbing his chest on the bench during Game 1. The Celtics guard was diagnosed with a chest contusion the next day.

Smart sat from the 3:11 mark in the third quarter until the 8:37 mark in the fourth quarter — a crucial stretch of play where neither team led by more than one possession.

He finished the game, but there were moments of clear discomfort on the court. Smart played 35 minutes in the contest, which is actually more than his 2023 postseason average of 31.6 minutes per game.

How long is Marcus Smart out?

The Celtics announced on Tuesday that Smart will be available for Game 2 despite dealing with a chest contusion.

There was very little doubt that Smart would miss Game 2 given his competitive nature. The floor general is averaging 16.0 points, 5.4 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals over seven playoff games.
