As Lakers' guard D'Angelo Russell gets set to start his second season, he seems poised to have a break through year.

With Kobe Bryant no longer in the league, Russell will look to become the team's marquee player.
On a recent edition of the The Vertical Podcast with Woj, Russell spoke about a variety of topics. Naturally his relationship with number one overall pick Ben Simmons came up and Russell had an interesting take on his time with the Aussie in high school.
"I just remember in practice just starring at this dude like 'this dude is going to be a pro'," Russell said. "And people don't even know about him."
Russell and Simmons wrecked havoc over the prep basketball scene for a year and a half. They were one of the most dominant tandems, leading Montverde to a 45-2 record and national championships in 2013 and ’14.
Both went onto college playing only one season, and then entered the NBA. All of which seems like a blur to Russell.
"I didn't see me getting drafted, I saw him getting drafted but I didn't see me getting drafted. It's just a whirlwind, we were just in high school the other day."
